It was a torment, forcing herself to walk at an ordinary pace through the maze of C Deck, up the grand staircase, out to the promenade and then all the way along the boat deck, when all she wanted to do was run. She couldn’t even talk to Sol properly until they got outside. It was too risky with so many people about.

On the boat deck a stiff wind made the criss-cross of cables hum and whine. A fine, sticky salt spray dampened Pepper’s hair. She pushed it out of her face and scrambled down the stairway to their meeting place, with Sol picking his way cautiously behind her.

Toby wasn’t there.

‘I told you we shouldn’t do it,’ Sol said, shaking his head.

But they were on to something! Pepper was certain of that, even if she didn’t yet know what it was. It was like unravelling a tangled ball of yarn: you couldn’t do a thing until you’d found an end among all the knots and loops. Once you had an end, you were on your way. Lady V’s cabin and the lock-picking mummy: that was a yarn end, no doubt about it. If they followed the thread, they might be able to pull out the mystery.

‘I wouldn’t be so sure about that,’ Sol said. ‘Life isn’t a ball of string, you know. It’s more like a plate of spaghetti. And if we don’t watch it, we’re gonna end up with the whole damn thing in our laps.’
